A bunch of guests just got announced for the convention in April. The one that has me most excited is Marv Wolfman. Time to get some old Vigilante comics signed, as well as a page of art from the comic. Should be fascinating to hear from him.
Nicola Scott it coming too, which is cool. I'm rapidly going off Birds Of Prey, but her art is great.
I mentioned Zachary Quinto earlier. Just announced is "Boomer" from the original Battlestar Galactica. Yay!
Now I'm looking foward to it, hopefully everyone announced will be able to come.

Guest Appearances: Silver Surfer in Cable & Deadpool
This appearance comes out of left field. C&D (not to be confused with the awesome Bill Mantlo creation bearing the same initials) has always struck me as an odd idea for a comic. Fabien Nicieza has never been a writer I've much cared for, but he came up with a little gem of a Silver Surfer appearance.
In a four-part arc, Cable seemingly (I say seemingly because I only have the 2 issues with SS, so I don't really know how this thing starts) gets the powers of a god, and sets about fixing the problems he sees in humanity. SHIELD, as you would expect, have a problem with this, and call in the X-Men. They also make contingency plans though, which brings us to the final pages of Cable & Deadpool #9:
Cyclops attempted a father/son moment to difuse things.
Ooooh Cable, that sounds like a challenge. Did I mention SHIELD making contingency plans?
I really like that events included in that exchange, you can just imagine the Surfer being all aloof about it. Obviously, there's only one guy to call to take on a god...

(by the by, what the HELL happened to Beast?!)
On to Cable & Deadpool #10:
The Surfer appears on the scene, and grabs hold of Cable, then flying around the world and through anything in the way, keeping Cable off balance by forcing him to rebuild everything they destroy.
No Cable, it's not going to end well.
Cyclops has an appropriate level of awe for Surfey, and a fun little exchange with Deadpool.
Meanwhile, the fight has reached all the way to Australia.
Cable's getting sick of this though, time to flex his muscles.
He smashes the board, and send SS tumbling into the Sydney Opera House. How does that work out for Cable?
Superhero beatdown imminent.
Then as he tends to do, rounds off the thrashing with some wise words.
"I will never allow another world to fall"
A very "anger leads to hate..." Yoda-esque passage, but it rounds off the exchange nicely, and shows the Surfer's motivation.
His role fulfilled, he departs.
A really nice SS appearance. Almost an outsiders perspective to him, he says very little, actually I think I captured all of his dialogue in the scans. The parts that I didn't scan are all Cable trying to reason with him. You get a real sense of his power and that he's, well, alien. He bursts on the scene, takes care of business, and departs as quickly as he arrived.
Also, how cool is it that Mr Fantastic can call up the Silver Surfer when he has a problem?

Guest Appearance: Firestorm in Arena
Dear DC
I purchased all four issues of Countdown: Arena. I'd like to take this opportunity to clarify something. I didn't buy Arena because I thought it was a good idea, or that it was going to be any good. Don't take my $15.96US as a sign that I'm in any way interested in Countdown, or indeed Final Crisis.
No, I bought this because it had Firestorm in it. An alternative-Earth Firestorm sure, but Firestorm nonetheless. Clearly it's a good idea to have Firestorm in a comic. Just please in future make the comics he appears in not suck quite so horribly as Arena did.

Ok, now that's out of the way, let's get down to the reason I forked out for this sucker (heh, double meaning!) :
We get a short glimpse of Earth 12 Firestorm.
Same chest emblem as the current one, the main difference in uniform being the red torso instead of yellow. Also a funky faceplate. The fire wings are a lot like Firehawk- possibly Lorrain's part of the matrix?
He only hangs around for a page though. The main Firestorm in this story is from Earth 37, dubbed "Quantum-Storm".
The matrix being made up of Ronnie and Captain Atom. That raises some interesting possibilities. Ronnie and Cap had an at times rocky student/teacher relationship. Also an interesting combination of the 2 hero's costume. Cap's chest symbol replaces the circle in the Firestorm one. The Firestorm emblem is reversed ala the JLU version. Plus obviously the yellow is replaced with white (silver? That would be more Captain Atom-ey, but it's hard to say).
Quantum-Storm has a bit of a rough time early on in his appearance. First of all he gets cut in half by the edge of the page.
Then he loses his nose.
He does however get to take part in the most low-budget rendering of a group shot in comic book history.
I know this thing came out weekly, but they couldn't have actually produced each issue in a week, could they? The art certainly suggests they tried...
There's a few shots of Quantum-Storm standing around watching the Supermen argue, but I'll skip all that highly interesting content, and get to some action.
Vampire Batman (the new one, not that other one) has a plan to bust out, and Quantum-Storm is a major player in it. This should be interesing.
Unless, y'know, he decides to wimp out or something...
He was entirely too eager to hand that over *sigh*
But not to worry, he's still going to get to go off with Bat-Batman and beat up some bad guys.
Looks like a trap though.
D'oh. Monarch had planned for all this, and steps in. What chance do the heroes have against a foe that easily dispatched with 3 Green Lanterns, and 3 Supermen? (Supermans?)
About what you'd expect.

How Not To Treat Girls, Featuring Firestorm
Y'know, I could've sworn I'd covered this one already, but apparently I haven't. On with the show...
Ronnie walks into the school cafeteria and gets in line. Then this happens:
We'll start with the obvious. Don't ignore your girlfriend. Now, apparently there's some crazy girl logic that makes this rule apply at all times when you're in a room together, regardless of whether or not you can see her. If she can see you, assume she's going to think you're ignoring her.
As every guy knows, admitting to your girl that you were in the wrong is a good move, even if you didn't really do anything. However, temper this with the knowledge that girls dislike wimps. Ronnie lays it on way too thick with his lame "I confess, I should have noticed you" bit. It's hardly surprising he was treated with scorn after this line. You need to placate the beast, not give it more reason to attack.
Also, when she's looking like this, it's a pretty good indication of PMS. The only safe option is to run, even if you are Firestorm.

So, 2008...
Looking foward to:
Resolutions:
- Final Crisis being over. I hate company-wide "events", I just want to be able to read a few titles and not have them disturbed, or have to buy a mini just to keep up to date with the greater "universe".
- Firestorm in JLA.
- A decent artist joining the JLA.
- A Hawkman comic is rumoured to come back at some stage. I'd like that, so long as someone decent was doing it.
- I've been in two minds about this, because he had an excellent death, but if Ted Kord came back I wouldn't complain.
- So far the only interesting guest for the con in April is 'Sylar', but I'm sure it'll get better closer to the event. So long as the writers strike doesn't screw things up.
- The Batman movie should be awesome. I hope.
Resolutions:
- Buy a trade atleast every couple of weeks. I've overlooked them for too long, and have recently been filling out my Hellblazer collection, among others. I want more.
- Find more time for drawing (somehow).
